Shadow nodded. He had expected her to say that. But still, they had been living with him for a long while now, and he needed to know exactly who he was living with and why they were so careful. It seemed that almost everything was a secret with these people, not just their name, and it was getting to be more suspicious then the lack of sound in the outside world.

Shadow was far too gutless to say such a thing though, and merely let his head hang in a moment of shame before delicately picking up one of the two bowls he had prepared and offered it to Lana. If she was going to hide things from him, he at least wanted her to be healthy when she did so.

Carefully she took the bowl off of him and sniffed it, as though figuring out if she was hungry or not. "Thank you..." Lana said quietly, her voice still trembling slightly. She gazed down at the food for a few moments, her eyes unfocused and clouded with the new build up of tears.

"Shadow..." She said after a moment as she looked up again, a couple of tears escaping down her face. "I-I know we-we've caused you a lot of hassle of the last few months... And I think... I think... I should probably tell you some things..." Quickly the raven-haired girl wiped her face as she set the bowl down on her lap. "Three questions, I'll answer them all. My only term is you can't ask our names, that's too risky..."

"I... see..." Shadow nodded again, pulling a chair away from the nearby table and sitting down calmly. Three questions weren't much and certainly not enough to answer all the questions he had. But, her offer had been made, and he knew without asking that it was a 'take it or leave it' kind of thing.

"First things first. Who exactly are all of you? not your names, but, at least why you guys are so careful and secretive?"

She took a deep breath again and began her lengthy explanation."We're what's left of the Special Provision for Kira task force. Or the SPK. We were responsible for catching Kira, only Kira out did us this time. Near is our leader, he was the one who defeated Kira last time along with someone named Mello. He's now dead, Elizabeth's his daughter though... And her mother was my best friend before she died last year." Lana's tone started off calm, and slowly faded into a quiet voice of greif. She rubbed her eyes again as though to clear them and continued.

"Scout grew up with Mello and Near, they were all part of this specialist home for exceptionally talented children. And as for me, I started off in the British secret service and as I have an excellent background in criminal psychology I was brought into the SPK back before it was really for Kira. I was a right brat back then though." She said, forcing a small giggle out. "Is that enough infomation...?"

Shadow nodded again. It was a little surreal, but considering the fact that Kira himself was seemingly out of a video game, nothing would surprise him anymore.However, there were a couple of things about what she said that nagged at him.

"This isn't a part of my three questions, so you don't have to answer but... Elizabeth's mother. Who was she? And how exactly did Kira win?"

"I think it'd be better for you ask her about her mum, and as for how did Kira win? Remember the bombing attacks in London in October? That was Kira killing the rest of the task force, we only survived because we weren't there. I'm not going into any more detail as they're not your questions..." Lana replied, trying her best to stay as vague as possible.

"In that case..." Shadow pondered for a second, thinking over his next question carefully. If he wasted it, he'd regret it, but if he didn't use it now, he voted he would probably lose it.

"Ok, what's everyone's relationship with one another?" the question popped out of his mind before he could stop himself, the image of her holding Near's hand still vivid in his mind.

"Scout pretty much looks out for Near, something that's left from when they were younger. She's only really here because she wants to help him..." Lana explained, her heart racing slightly as she realised she would have to admit to her relationship with Near. She'd been hoping that he would over look that question, but maybe on some level she' wanted to tell him. Just for someone to talk to. After all, since Mellody had died she'd not really had anyone to talk to. Sure there was Near, but he was now so sick. And he had been that way for so long, they'd barely had time to talk since Kira's power had started to peak.

"Elizabeth is Mellody's daughter, and Mellody was my best friend, so we've kind of ended up being her guardian. We being me and Near." She continued, trying to put off explaining about their relationship. But there were not many others to put before them so she couldn't post-pone it any longer.

"And as for me and Near..." She said, her tone lowering as she looked at the sickly man once more. "It's a bit more complicated then just a boss and an employee." Lana mumbled, she found herself slowly reaching for his hand again seeing as pretending it's different to what it is would be foolish now she was about to say it in plain black and white. "I ended up being his 'babysitter' of sorts during this Kira case. And as we spent so much time together and got to know each other better we kind of... you know... fell in love... I know that sounds weird, but it doesn't sound as odd to me as 'we started dating' because technically we didn't. We just sort of clicked after a while..."

"hmmm..." Shadow nodded again. What was there for him to really say? It was a matter of fact, so there wasn't really anything to ask. He merely grabbed the extra bowl he'd prepared and lightly started to eat, pondering over what his third question should be.

However, he could visibly see how drained this girl was, physically, and mentally. So, if there was a chance to simply ask later on, he'd take it. "Luna. Is it ok if I ask my third question later?"

"Yeah... Sure... Whatever..." She replied dismissively, her eyes firmly locked onto Near. Even though Lana had never been a religious person but right now she was praying to whatever deity there was out there just to let him be better for even just a few hours. All she wanted right now was to talk to him, about anything. About the weather, about toys, about Kira, hell even about Mello. Just so long as she could have a conversation.

Shadow waited a moment, observing the careful gaze Luna held Near within. It made him slightly jealous, to be truthful, that this girl could be so in love with this man, and somehow manage to turn a blind eye to everyone else. But, such thoughts were underneath him, as they were underneath all but the lowest of the low.

"All the same, though... Don't you think you should get some rest?" Shadow questioned, his thoughts coming aloud. "I can look after him for awhile if you want. I can even drag in that spare mattress you've been sleeping on so that you can get some sleep from just across the room..."

"Thanks for your concern..." She said, looking over at him. For the first time since she'd arrived she smiled warmly at the boy, not a smirk or a sneer. "But I'll be all right for a little while longer. Honestly." Lana said, as her gaze turned back to Near. She squeezed his hand slightly. "I just don't want him waking up and me not being awake..." She sighed as she gently stroked his hand with her thumb.

It was pointless to argue with Lana once she had made up her mind. She was one of the most stubborn young women you could have the misfortune to come across, except when Near was the one facing her down. He was the only one, bar Mellody, who ever could change her mind.

"You know, I could always just wake you up when he starts to stir." Shadow smiled hopefully. The girl could be stubborn, but she was logical, and that was what he would have to appeal to. "I'm sure he'd rather see you happy and healthy then barely concious..."

"He's used to it, it's the state I was in when we first met." She giggled weakly. "Don't worry about it Shadow, just go back to whatever it was you were doing before." Lana said reassuringly. "I'll be fine."

Meanwhile, in the city of London, which wasn't all that far away from the tiny village that the SPK had settled down in, the other half of the force were wandering around the streets in search of Christmas cheer in the snow.

Scout, ever the cheerful one, was skipping down the road. Her bright yellow scarf swaying in the breeze and with each bound. "Hey, Lizzy," She said, turning so she was facing the younger girl that she was with. However she kept walking all the while, just backwards rather then forwards. "What do you like most about Christmas?" Scout asked, unable to stop herself from giggling like a hyper-active child.

"I'm still almost certain he'd be happier to see you healthy" Shadow smiled back at her, not about to be defeated by the logic of 'We met like this.'

"The snow" the girl answered almost immediately, her own light blue scarf bellowing softly in the wind as she struggled to keep up with the older woman. It was truly amazing this girl had lasted so long without being discovered, with such a laid-back attitude, and yet, Elizabeth found herself drawn to this feverish and carefree girl. Heck, she had somehow managed to drag her this far out for a turkey, of all things, rather then to scout out information around this area.

"I doubt he'll see me healthy or unhealthy." Lana said, a bitter tang of helplessness biting through her tone. "Thanks for your concern, but I'm a big girl; I can make my own choices." She said, forcing a reassuring smile and brushing her hair behind her ear.

Lana wasn't going to back down, once she had made up her mind that was it. No one was going to change it. And it was easier just to let her get on with it.

Scout giggled. "I like the snow too. But when I was growing up it didn't snow much." She sighed, stopping in the snow and slowly sunk knee-deep into the white powder. She gazed skywards into the bright white clouds. "I didn't see a white Christmas until last year." She giggled. "I like how happy everyone gets, and how people who usually don't say two words to each other get along like a house on fire. Reminds me of happier times..."

"What do you mean by, 'I doubt he'll see me' exactly?" Shadow asked curiously, picking up on the peculiar wording of her sharp reply. If she had merely said 'I doubt he'd care' that would be one thing, but somehow, he felt that the boys condition had grown alot worse...

Lana smiled quietly. Such memories were denied to her unfortunately, having been abandoned and found during Kira's original reign. All she could remember of 'Christmas' was waiting quietly in a mellowed out room and receiving a new book. Of course, she couldn't complain. Mellody and Mello had both been wonderfully amazing parents. Her only real complaint was their rash way of doing things having lead her to be spending this time, not with them, but with Scout...

"Scout... can we change the subject?"

"He's losing his eyesight..." Lana mumbled, stroking the sleeping Near's hand with her fingers gently. "He's never had good eyesight, what with being albino and all... But this has made it even worse. Hopefully it'll sort itself out when he's better." She said, but it sounded as though she was just trying to convince herself into believing what she was saying.

"Of course sweetie." Scout smiled kindly as she jumped backwards over a log that was obstructing the desolate pathways. "What do you want to talk about?" She said as she regained her balance. In this time of desperation and darkness she felt it was her responsibility to be everyone's crutch, to cheer everyone up. And she didn't mind, that had always been her job.

Shadow shook his head silently. One way or another, it was wrong for this girl to be depriving herself of her own health, even if it was to care for her sick boyfriend. Still though, it didn't quite seem like his place having only just come in their life, and as such, he held in the need to argue.

Shadow was not the type to merely leave the room like that, however, pulling a flannel from a nearby cupboard and leaving the room to wet it quietly...

"I don't know." Elizabeth replied, shrugging bitterly as her eyes silently wondered to the snow-burdened sky. A year or so ago, she quite possibly would've given anything for this sight right now, but, not in a world like this. Feeling the need to escape those thoughts, however, she turned to Scout. "What was it like in Wammy's?"

Once Shadow had left the room Lana slipped her hand around Near's. In a slow motion she raised his hand to her lips and kissed it gently. "I love you..." She said quietly, her green eyes firmly fixed on his face. They were filled with tears that were just about to start trickling down her face.

"It was... Interesting to say the least." Scout smiled as she spun around in the falling flakes. "There was nearly always something interesting going on. Mainly because your Dad liked to blow stuff up a little too much. There was a brief time when he was banned from the Chemistry labs because he kept blowing it up." She laughed.

Rinsing the flannel out, Shadow slowly approached the silent room. Lana had said her and Near were an item, but it still came to a slight surprise when he found Lana on the Virge of tears staring at the face of the sickly boy. A slight impulse to comfort her fell over Shadow, but a larger doubt constricted him, holding him back from offering her whatever little help he could as he instead brushed the boy's hair back slightly, placing the damp flannel coolly across his forehead.

A slight smile escaped Kat despite herself, a genuine, happy smile at the memory and image of her father's explosive manner. Just being alivewas interesting when it came to that man, even Kat's mother had said so. Despite himself, however, he had been quite the fool. "Scout... can you... tell me more about my Dad...?" Lana asked sadly, her eyes squirming slightly as the question escaped her.

"Thank you for the help, Shadow." Lana said, lowering Near's hand again. Her eyes still not straying from his face. There was an ever growing lump in her throat when she thought of him. Of how sick he was and how he may not be with her much longer. It was agonising. All she wanted was him to be healthy, sod everything else. She didn't care what state the world they lived in was, just so long as they lived together.

"Sure thing kiddo." Scout smiled. "Most of my good stories involve him. Let's see... Did I ever tell you about what he did on his last christmas at Wammy's?" She asked as she readjusted her woolly hat.

Shadow nodded a slight smile coming to his face as he patiently pulled a chair up next to the bed and studied the two. They really were similar now that he thought about it, both being abnormally thin and incredibly pale. He could more then likely bet they had been similar even before they had been like this. Either way, it was obvious the physical and mental strain bearing down on Lana had long since exceeded the girl's capacity, and the site was just overall sad.

"Lana. Please, get some sleep. Sleep next to him if you so chose, just, please, get some sleep."

The girl chuckled slightly at the foolish question, looking her hyperactive superior in the eyes before turning her gaze back to the streets. "Scout, you've never told me ANY tales about Wammy's. So are you seriously asking me that?"

"I'll be fine, I'll get some sleep tomorrow or something. Don't worry, I'm used to little sleep. Never have been much of a sleeper." She said reassuringly, although her eyes never left Near's face. And this was true, she'd gone for weeks at a time with no sleep before. She'd spent most of her university years living off of leftovers and power naps, and most of her earlier years too. "I'm sure you have better things to do then to sit here and watch me watch him." Lana said with a weak giggle.

"I've told you a couple. Like I told you about Juliet, didn't I?" Scout said, pouting slightly. Before Near had fallen ill she'd chatted with him constantly about things that had happened in long since gone times. And usually Near, Lana and Kat tended to be in the same room for one reason or another.

"Not really. Just some video games" Shadow sighed, his lips contorting into a face of worry. It wasn't so simple, unfortunately. Perhaps she was used to it but from the way she held herself and talked, even Shadow was starting to get the hint that not many people had cared for her, and she had not cared for many people. So, her feelings towards Near were almost definitely new to her, and how much it strained her showed. Though, he could hardly argue this to the girl without looking like he was trying to pry, and seeking not to piss off his new friend, he simply kept his mouth shut on the matter, moving onto something else. "Well, do you want me to give you my game boy or something to pass the time?"

Kat shook her head silently. "You might have mentioned it briefly, but I don't listen to other people's conversations unless I feel I need to."
